UK MOT data: model-year pass rates and individual car histories
Nov 7, 2026
A look at DVSA MOT data, first-time pass rates for 457 UK models by first-use year, and a free MOT history check by registration.
UK used-car shoppers often face two different tasks: checking the history of a specific car and understanding how a model year compares on MOT tests. DVSA publishes MOT records, but individual results can be difficult to compare across models and first-use years.
CarHistory.cc uses anonymised DVSA data to show first-time MOT pass rates for 457 UK car models, broken down by first-use year and compared with the average for cars of the same age. The site provides free CSV downloads and publishes its methodology, giving readers a way to inspect the figures and how they were calculated.
For a particular car, a registration-based check displays recorded MOT tests since 2005, including results, defects, advisories and mileage readings. Mileage drops are flagged for a closer look. The check is free and does not require an account.
These figures describe MOT testing, not every aspect of a vehicle’s condition or history. Buyers can use the data as a starting point for questions alongside a physical inspection and other checks relevant to a purchase.
